By Rufiz Hafizoglu - Trend:

Twelve employees of the Turkish National Intelligence Organization were killed in the Iraqi city of Mosul, the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet said Dec. 30.

Reportedly, Kurdish militia mistook Turkish intelligence staff for the militants of the "Islamic State" terrorist organization.

Other details of the incident are yet to be announced.

In 2013, the terrorist organization known as the "Islamic State" (IS, formerly ISIL or ISIS) penetrated Syria.

Then, the IS announced its refusal to take the oath of Al-Qaeda, and announced a "holy war" against all the groups and government forces in Syria.

Strengthening of the IS in Syria allowed it to return to Iraq, deploying military actions against government forces there.

In late June 2014, the IS announced about the creation of an "Islamic caliphate" on the territories under its control in Iraq and Syria. Iraqi authorities appealed to international community requesting help to fight against the IS.
