Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry calls on citizens to be cautious while travelling to Iran, foreign ministry spokesman Elman Abdullayev told reporters on Friday.
"The latest incident with detainees of Azeri poets in Iran is a vivid proof of this. Why do citizens of Azerbaijan have to deal with such cases in the country that calls itself friendly towards us?" Abdullayev said.
Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry forced to make such a statement and urge their citizens not to travel to Iran, where they may face similar cases, Abdullayev said.
"Nobody can be immune to the fact that tomorrow he will be detained in that country [Iran], and absurd accusations will be put forward against him," Abdullayev said.
He noted that such an attitude of the Iranian side to the citizens of neighboring country is not clear and unacceptable.
Two Azerbaijani citizens, Farid Huseyn and Shahriyar Hajizade, have been missing in Iran since May 2.
Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry has sent five notes to Iran's Foreign Ministry demanding clarification of the situation with the two missing men.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry confirmed the arrest of two Azerbaijani citizens. According to its response to Azerbaijan's note, the pair are accused of attempting to commit a crime.
