The EU can play a more active role in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, EU Special Representative for South Caucasus Peter Semneby said.

"The EU can play a more active role in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to support the OSCE Minsk Group but not instead it in connection with intensification of relations with the countries of the region," Semneby said at a press conference following his visit to Azerbaijan.

It is necessary to seek methods of confidence, he said.

"We will consider ways with which the EU can contribute to solving the conflict", he said.

He said that the resumption of contacts between the countries is encouraging.

"As the United States is co-chairman of the Minsk Group, the upcoming visit of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to the region will play a role in the negotiations. The U.S. intends to use this visit to promote the issue," Semneby said.
