Azerbaijani Interior Ministry said that acts of hooliganism committed against U.S. and British citizens in the Yasamal district in Baku were coincidental.
U.S. citizen Amanda Ericson and British citizen Cilia Davis appealed to the Yasamal District Police Department with reports of being beaten by four unknown individuals at 12:30 a.m. on June 16, the Interior Ministry's deputy spokesman Ehsan Zahidov told
Zahidov said one of the women received injuries and was provided with first aid treatment at the hospital.
Zahidov refuted some media reports that they were pursued or that the incident was planned. He said that according to the victims' statements the incident was coincidental and an act of hooliganism.
Zahidov emphasized that the Yasamal District Police Department is proceeding with the investigating and a search team is working to identify and arrest the violators.
"The Interior Ministry decisively condemns beating people, particularly committing such acts towards foreigners in our country," he said. "The perpetrators will be brought to justice regardless of who they are," Zahidov stressed.
