One of the squares in Tehran is to be named after Olympics taekwondo gold medallist Hadi Saei, a Tehran municipality spokesman said Sunday. ( dpa )

Saei's gold in Friday's -80kg taekwondo greatly boosted Iran's medal tally after it had gained only a single bronze in wrestling.

Spokesman Khosrow Daneshju told ISNA news agency that one of the squares in the district where Saei lives would be named after the double Olympic champion.

Saei had also won gold in the 2004 Athens Olympics - in the category 58-68kg - and bronze in the 2000 Games in Sydney.

Iranian expectations had been high for the Beijing Olympics, especially in wrestling, judo and discus.

The disappointing performance led to harsh criticism of the Iranian National Olympic Committee (INOC) and even demands that its secretary Ali Kafashian be fired.
