Editor-in-Chief of Azerbaijani Opposition Newspaper to Appeal to European Court

Azerbaijan, Baku, 26 August / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / Ganimat Zahid, the editor-in-chief of Azadlig newspaper, will appeal to the European Court on Human Rights, Elchin Sadigov, a lawyer of the editor-in-chief, told Trend on 26 August.

Zahid was charged with intended less grievous injury damage to human health and hooliganism. The Yasamal District Court sentenced him to four-year imprisonment. The Supreme Court examined the editor-in-chief's cassation appeal on 26 August. The lawyer said that, the court kept in force the sentence of the Yasamal District Court and decision of the Appeal Court. The court did not acquit Zahid.

The Yasamal District Court of Baku sentenced Zahid to two-month imprisonment on 11 November 2007. The incident which took place in front of the Azerbaijan Publishing House, where editorial office of Azadlig newspaper is located, at 04.00pm on 7 November caused the editor-in-chief's arrest. Dispute amongst Sevgilade Guliyeva, Vusal Hasanov and Zahid resulted in fight. On 7 November, Hasanov, who appealed to the Yasamal District Police Department, passed court-medical examination and got a judgment on cranium and brain injury.

Hasanov was charged with the same accusations and his criminal case was connected to a criminal case of the editor-in-chief. The court sentenced Hasanov to one-year and six-month imprisonment.

A total of three journalists are under arrest in connection with their job activities.
