Azerbaijan, Baku, 2 September / Trend corr. K.Zarbaliyeva / The Council of Europe (CE) supports reforms in the penitentiary system of Azerbaijan.
The project on Support to prison reforms in Azerbaijan 2008-2009 was sanctioned on the base of reached agreement between the CE and Azerbaijani Justice Ministry.
The project targets to determine needs to realize reforms in prison system in line with the European standards. The Norwegian Government finances the project, which will last two years.
At present the project is under initial stage.
Objective of the project is to improve quality of professional skills of the prison employees, to render support for protection of prisoners' rights, to prevent disease cases at prisons and to develop medical supply, to use alternative punishments, as well as to establish the Trial Service in Azerbaijan.
