Azerbaijan proposes alphabet change

Azerbaijan, Baku, Aug. 17 / Trend I.Isabalayeva /

The Latin script for Azerbaijani must change, Institute of Linguistics Acting Director Fahreddin Veyselli told Trend on Friday.

He said from a scientific point of view the Azerbaijani alphabet has excess characters. The "q", "ğ", "ə", "ç" letters of the alphabet can be written easier. Difficulties arise in the correspondence on the Internet.

It is necessary think about what to replace them with, Veyselli said.

Combining the graphemes can be used.

Veyselli considers wrong from a scientific point of view writing letter "ə" in Azerbaijani.
In the Azerbaijani language, except for the letter "ə", periods are put over all the vowels (ö, i, ü), he said.

By following this symmetry, the letter "ə" can be written as "a", but with the two points above.

From a scientific point of view it would be more correct way to write the letter "ə" in such a way.

Germans write the letter "ç" as "tsch", the British - as "ch", Veyselli said. Apparently, they only use the Latin alphabet.

According to the scientist, who believes this is the best option, in Azerbaijan, too, the letter "ç" can be written, combining the two graphemes.

"We write the letter "ç" with "hook". There's no need. No world alphabet uses letter "ç" as the fourth letter of the alphabet, because it is simply not necessary," acting director said.

"If we use the Latin alphabet, you have to use what we have. It is not necessary to complement Latin script with new characters," the scientist said.

A single Turkish alphabet should be created for Turkic-speaking peoples, he said. There is nothing to be changed. It is also possible to use the Latin alphabet, or certain compounds or diacritical marks.
