Baku, Azerbaijan, June 16
By Maksim Tsurkov - Trend:
Fernando Alonso, two-time winner of the Formula One World Championship, and a McLaren Honda team driver, is fully convinced that Baku has been correctly chosen as a venue for the Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe.
"We completely rely on FIA [Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile] in terms of the places and the venues we race," Alonso, who is also a European Grand Prix ambassador, said at a press-conference in Baku June 16. "I totally put my trust, my confidence on the Federation and on the decision that they made."
"If we are racing here, it is because everything was good to them, and therefore is good for us," added Alonso.
"We are promoting the sport around the world," he said. "We are also promoting the values of the sport around the world and that will be always welcoming in any country."
Alonso also said the work conducted in Baku is fantastic and everything is ready for the race.
"The fans are very enthusiastic about the race on Sunday," Alonso added. "Everything is ready for a good show."
Speaking about the Baku circuit, Alonso said the narrow section of the uphill will be quite interesting to drive.
"We don't get involved in the layout of any of the decisions regarding the circuit," added Alonso. "But there are some corners that probably we will talk about, some others that we need to go in the car first and see how they feel."
"We saw Singapore was also making small modifications to some corners year after year until we found a good compromise," said Alonso. "I think it is going to be quite similar here."
The 2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe to be held in Azerbaijan for the first time will start June 17 at 18:00 (GMT + 4 hours). The European Grand Prix will be held over 51 laps on the new circuit of slightly over 6 kilometers. The maximum estimated speed at the race is 340 km/h.
