Azerbaijani Authorities Against Journalists Violating Dignity of Citizens : Senior State Officer
Azerbaijan, Baku / corr Trend S.Agayeva / Ali Hasanov, the head of the Public and Political Department of the President's Executive Power, stated in Baku on 23 May that the Azerbaijani authorities are against journalists violating the dignity of citizens.
He noted that there is no pressure on the media in Azerbaijan and freedom of press and expression is protected by the Government.
He said that the government cannot support journalists who equate freedom of expression with anarchy. He was commenting on statements made by several international organizations of the existence of pressure on the press in Azerbaijan. "We do not think there is a real threat on the freedom of expression in Azerbaijan," Hasanov stated.
At present 7 journalists are in custody in Azerbaijan primarily accused of slander and assault and battery to individuals
