Azerbaijan substantially raises turnover of payment cards

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 4. Azerbaijan's payment card turnover through ATMs and POS terminals increased by 2.9 billion manat ($1.7 billion), or 54.65 percent, from 5.3 billion manat ($3.1 billion) to 8.2 billion manat ($4.8 billion) in January 2024, Trend reports.

According to the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA), there were 128.023 million payment card transactions (up 81.01 percent from the previous year), with 5.395 million transactions worth 273 million manat ($160.5 million) conducted abroad.

Debit card transactions (both inside and outside the country) totaled 116.601 million for 7.6 billion manat ($4.4 billion), with 12.562 million transactions worth 2.6 billion manat ($1.5 billion) made through ATMs within the country and 36.44 million transactions worth 721 million manat ($423.9 million) made through POS terminals within the country.

Bank clients used credit cards to conduct 11.422 million transactions worth 620 million manat ($364.5 million) (both within and outside the nation).

At the same time, 546,000 transactions amounting to 113 million manat ($66.4 million) were made through ATMs inside the country, and 5.33 billion transactions amounting to 165 million manat ($97 million) were made through POS terminals.

To note, the number of payment cards in Azerbaijan increased by 3.382 million, or 24.4 percent as of February 2024 compared to the same period last year and reached 17.241 million against 13.859 million a year before.
