Deputy Minister: Azerbaijan to complete modernisation of main trunk roads in 2015

The construction, modernisation and reconstruction of all major trunk roads in Azerbaijan will be completed in 2015, Azerbaijani Deputy Transport Minister Musa Panahov said on Thursday at the opening of the twelfth international exhibition 'Transport, Transit and Logistics' (TransCaspian-2013) in Baku.

"Azerbaijan has achieved great results in economic development and in particular those achievements have affected the transport sector. Major transport projects are being implemented in the country along with improving the road and transport infrastructure, developing the infrastructure of maritime transport, railway communications and other areas," Panahov said.

Among the major projects implemented by Azerbaijan, the deputy minister mentioned construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. The project will provide access to Europe as well as have a positive impact on the growth of freight and the transit potential of both Azerbaijan and the region as a whole.

According to Panahov, the increasing number of vehicles requires continued improvement of the road infrastructure.

"The number of vehicles is increasing annually and only last year the country imported more than 100,000," Panahov said.

Therefore, according to the deputy minister, the reconstruction and expansion of roads will continue.

As the head of Azeryolservis, Javid Gurbanov said earlier, 30-35 billion manat will be required for upgrading and constructing roads in Azerbaijan.
