SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) and BP will build a waste recycling center in the Garadagh district of Baku, vice-president of SOCAR on environmental issues Rafiga Huseynzadeh said at the Caspian Oil and Gas 2013 conference.

She said the center will be built for the processing of mainly oil and drill cuttings and formation water.

The cost of the project, according to Huseynzadeh, is estimated at $60 million. Funding will be provided by SOCAR and BP at a 50 to 50 ratio.

Huseynzadeh said a tender will be announced in the near future, and construction work will start after selecting a contractor.

According to her, the recycling centre will be commissioned in late 2013 or early 2014.

The vice-president also noted that SOCAR's existing center for waste management is outdated and does not have the ability to process all necessary types of waste.

BP, according to her, is also in need of such a center.

Speaking about the cooperation between SOCAR and BP, Huseynzadeh noted installation of a unit for the collection of associated gas at the Chirag field is scheduled for completion in the current month and will reduce emissions of associated gas to two percent as well as bring this figure down to zero in the future.
