Europe eyes oil and gas import from Iran and Venezuela

TEHRAN, Iran, August 31. Europe is seeking to convince the US to import gas and oil from Iran and Venezuela to compensate for its upcoming energy shortage in winter, said the former chief of the Caspian Sea and Central Asia affairs in the Ministry of Petroleum Mahmoud Khaghani, Trend reports citing ILNA.

Europe is aware that it's unlikely to import gas from Iran in a short-term period, especially since Iran needs gas for its domestic consumption and has recently signed an agreement with Russian gas company Gazprom, the energy expert stressed.

Khaghani pointed out that Europe has little chance of importing crude oil from Iran because most of Iran's crude oil is being presold to China.

Meanwhile, Venezuela is seeking to use the opportunity and sanctions against Iran's oil and gas export in its favor to attract European investment in its oil industry, he said adding that Venezuela's crude oil export to Europe would pay the country's debts.

The negotiation between the Biden administration and the Venezuelan government is an optimistic outlook for the resumption of Europe ties with Caracas, Khaghani indicated.

According to the expert, Iran's return to Europe's energy market after the possible agreement for revival of the 2015 nuclear deal will take time, and Venezuela is a proper choice for Europe to prevent an energy crisis in winter.
