BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 5. Iran plans to invest 7.57 quadrillion rials (about $180 billion) in the electricity sector by August 2025, when the current government’s term ends, Iran's Energy Minister Ali Akbar Mehrabian said at a press conference in Tehran on Feb. 3, Trend reports.
Mehrabian said that the ongoing operations in this area will increase Iran’s TPPS electricity output by 20,000 megawatts, extend the electricity network, and finish the construction of substations.
Moreover, the country aims to spend 8.24 quadrillion rials (about $196 billion) on the water sector and complete several projects in this field by August 2025.
According to Mehrabian, 70 percent of the work in both the water and electricity sectors has already been done. Therefore, the total expenditure on the water sector in the four-year period of the current government (August 2021 through August 2025) will reach 12.2 quadrillion rials (about $291 billion).
There are currently 616 power units operating in 134 TPPs in Iran. The power generation capacity of the country's thermal power plants is 74,198 megawatt-hours.
Over 280 million megawatts of electricity were generated by the country's thermal power plants in the first nine months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through December 21, 2023).
At present, the power generation capacity of all of Iran's power plants, including thermal, hydroelectric, nuclear, renewable, etc., is approximately 91,000 megawatt-hours. Of this, 82 percent is accounted for by the country’s thermal power plants.
