Azerbaijani Cable Operators Association talks development of fiber optic internet

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 17

By Sadraddin Agjayev – Trend:

FTTB (Fiber to the Building) will be the most promising technology in Azerbaijan soon, Executive Director of the Azerbaijani Cable Operators Association Ali Aliyev said in an interview with Trend.

“In this case, the fiber-optic communication line will reach each building in which the access equipment has been installed, that is, the Ethernet switch,” the executive director added. “The advantages are obvious, the low cost of connection, convenience for subscribers, availability of internet ports on all computers and network devices. Additional equipment is not required to use the service. The main lines of internet providers rendering high-speed internet services in Azerbaijan have been built on the basis of this technology.”

“Perhaps, other technologies will be suitable for settlements with a low building density,” Aliyev added. “The most promising and competitive technology is the passive optical network technology Fiber To The X (FTTx), that is, optical fiber to X point (GPON). From the commercial point of view, while rendering a range of Triple Play telecommunications services, that is, rendering of three services simultaneously - high-speed internet access, cable TV and telephony, this greatly allows to meet customers’ needs."

"Traditional solutions of Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) absolutely do not give any advantage over Ethernet access,” Aliyev said. “In case of joint using of the band, an average of 20 Mbit/s accounts for each subscriber while in case of Ethernet access, up to 100 Mbit/s may be allocated for each subscriber."

“If several districts of Baku city were connected via Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS), that is (transmitting information via a TV coaxial cable), but given the development of technology, preference was given to the active introduction of Ethernet with the speed of up to 100 Mbit/s,” said Aliyev.

“If one takes into account the long-term prospect, the combination of IPTV + HDTV + TV + broadband internet access in several rooms of one apartment may increase the speed requirements from 40 Mbit/s and more. In this case, Ethernet will retain its availability,” he said.
