Iran records increase in cargo transportation via railroads of north-western provinces

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 13. Cargo transportation through the railways of Iran’s East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan and Ardabil provinces in the north-west of the country, increased by 11 percent, during the first eight months of the current Iranian year (March 21 through November 21, 2022), compared to the same period last Iranian year, Director General of Iran’s Azerbaijan Railway Department Mohammad Reza Ghorbani told reporters, Trend reports citing IRNA.

Ghorbani noted that in total, 490,000 tons of cargo were transported through railroads of the mentioned provinces in 8 months, which is 15 percent more than in the same period last Iranian year.

The director general added that 212,000 tons of cargo were transported for export purposes in 8 months, which is an increase of 18 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year.

“The exported goods were mainly petrochemical products, food products, and industrial products,” he said.

According to Ghorbani, 146,000 tons of cargo were transported for transit purposes through railways of East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan and Ardabil provinces within 8 months. Transit increased by 10 percent compared to the same period last Iranian year.

“Meanwhile, 132,000 tons of goods were transported for imports to Iran through the mentioned railways for eight months,” the official also pointed out.

The director general stressed that more than 1.6 million passengers were transported through railways of the mentioned three provinces in 8 months, which is an increase of 36 percent compared to the same period the preceding Iranian year.
