BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 30. Iran Fuel Conservation Company and Iran Railway Company signed an agreement on increasing freight and passenger transportation by railroads, in Tehran on May 30, 2023, Trend reports.
The agreement was signed by Executive Director of Iran's Fuel Conservation Company Hossein Abniki, and CEO of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways (IRIR) Miad Salehi.
With the implementation of the mentioned agreement, the fuel consumed in freight and passenger transportation by road transport will be saved.
In total, $7.5 billion dollars is expected to be spent under the agreement. Thus, new freight and passenger wagons and locomotives will be purchased and existing wagons and locomotives will be repaired.
Currently, the length of railway lines in Iran is 14,984 kilometers.
Generally, 1,660 wagons and locomotives worth 57.6 trillion rials (about $1.37 billion) have been put into use in Iran since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2022). Of those, 1,570 were new freight wagons, 23 were new locomotives, 10 were new passenger wagons, as well as 17 were repaired locomotives, and 40 were repaired passenger wagons.
