Kazakh Speaker Kairat Mami took part in the elections to the Majilis (lower chamber) and maslikhats (local representative body), the press service of the Parliament reported.
"This morning the Chairman of the Senate Kairat Mami voted in Astana at the polling station No 3, located in the Congress hall," the statement said.
"Today's elections for the first time will form a multi-party Parliament in Kazakhstan," Mami told media after the voting. "This fact demonstrates our country's adherence to the democratic development."
Mami said that the multi- party Parliament will strengthen the role of this legislature body.
According to the amended Kazakh constitution, at least two parties should be presented in a new Parliament.
The elections to Majilis and maslikhats are held today in Kazakhstan. The preliminary election results will be announced on January 16.
The Nur Otan national-democratic party, Adilet, Kazakhstan Patriots' Party, Nationwide social-democratic party, Ak Zhol, Communist People's Party of Kazakhstan and the Kazakh Social Democratic Party Auyl are taking part in the elections.
