BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 14. Cargo turnover between Kazakhstan and China increased by 32 percent year-over-year in the first quarter of 2023 and reached 6.5 million tons, Trend reports, citing Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ).

KTZ, the national railway operator of Kazakhstan, revealed that the volume of incoming cargo from China increased by 7 percent to 2.6 million tons. Meanwhile, the volume of cargo traveling from Kazakhstan to China increased by 56 percent to 3.8 million tons.

KTZ noted that currently, Kazakhstan is implementing several projects to boost the cargo turnover with China. One of these projects is the construction of the second track of the Dostyk-Moyinti railway, which will enable the countries to increase cargo turnover fivefold.

Additionally, the Bakhty-Ayagoz railway track construction, which envisages the launch of the third Bakhty checkpoint, is the other major project. KTZ estimates that the launch of the checkpoint will increase the annual throughput between Kazakhstan and China by 20 million.

Earlier, Yerlan Koyshibayev, Deputy Chairman of Kazakhstan Temir Zholy, said that cargo turnover between Kazakhstan and China exceeded 23 million tons, which is an all-time high.
