France ready to cooperate with Kazakhstan in construction of first nuclear power plant

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 3. France is ready to cooperate in the implementation of the project for the construction of the first nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan, as well as to study the prospects for the development of small modular reactors, Oliver Becht, Minister Delegate for Foreign Trade, Economic Attractiveness and French Nationals Abroad, said at the meeting with Kazakh Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev, Trend reports via the Kazakh Ministry of Energy.

The development of renewable energy sources helps to achieve comprehensive decarbonization goals while fostering economic ties between Kazakhstan and France, the ministers stressed during the meeting as they discussed the commitments of their governments in the areas of energy transition and the fight against global warming.

Furthermore, the ministers also expressed their satisfaction with the recent advances in the Mirny project (the project for the construction of a 1 GW wind farm in Mirny, Kazakhstan). In particular, they noted the agreement reached on April 29, 2023, between the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, JSC KazMunayGas, and the French TotalEren company.

In addition, the prospects for the development of nuclear energy in Kazakhstan were discussed during the meeting. In this regard, the French side expressed its readiness to assist Kazakhstan.

Following the meeting, the parties signed a joint statement on the agreements reached on the tariff for electric energy as part of the implementation of the large-scale Mirny project.
