ASTANA, Kazakhstan, July 5. Kazakhstan's government decided to allocate 4.9 billion Kazakh tenge ($10.9 million) for the modernization of power equipment at the Mangystau Nuclear Power Plant (MAEK LLP), the country's Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov said during his working visit to Aktau to assess the repair work at MAEK LLP, Trend reports.
In addition to these funds, the regional administration of the Mangystau region also allocated 2.6 billion Kazakh tenge ($5.8 million) to replace the most worn-out equipment of the power plant, pump equipment of the desalination units, and others.
It was noted that MAEK LLP provides the residents of Aktau and other settlements in the Mangystau region with electricity and heat energy. Additionally, the enterprise's desalination complex produces drinking water, hot water, and technical water. However, the main power equipment of MAEK was put into operation in the 1960s-1990s, and its physical deterioration currently exceeds 80 percent.
During the visit to the plant, Smailov heard reports from the Akim (governor) of the Mangystau region, Nurlan Nogaev, and the CEO of MAEK LLP, Zhasulan Suynchaliev, about the current situation at the thermal power station, as well as the ongoing efforts to eliminate the consequences of the recent accident. It was noted that the repairs are being carried out according to the schedule, and the power unit is planned to be fully operational by July 7.
On July 3, 2023, a disruption in the power supply occurred at the thermal power plant of MAEK LLP, which led to instability and disturbances in the power system of western Kazakhstan with massive power outages in the region.
