ASTANA, Kazakhstan, January 31. Over 1.18 billion transactions were carried out using various payment instruments in Kazakhstan in December 2023, Trend reports.
According to the data from Kazakhstan's National Bank, the total value of these transactions was 95.7 trillion tenge (about $213 billion).
Money cards and money orders are the most often used payment options in Kazakhstan. At the same time, the average payment order amount in December 2023 was 692,082 tenge (about $1,540).
In addition, a high specific weight of payment cards on the volume of transactions and a low on value of transactions are due to the use of this payment tools primarily for operation with small amounts.
During the specified period, checks and other electronic payment options are used the least frequently. The insignificant part of use of given instruments in total volume and value is caused by their specificity.
As of January 1, 2024, Kazakhstan had 74.5 million payment cards in circulation. Debit cards account for 80.8 percent of all payment cards in the country, while credit cards account for 16.4 percent. Debit cards with credit limits and prepaid cards account for 2.8 percent of the total.
Meanwhile, the volume of transactions using payment cards of Kazakh issuers amounted to 16.8 trillion tenge (about $37.4 billion), the number of transactions was 1.06 billion in December 2023. Compared to the same period in 2022, the number of non-cash transactions increased by 20.9 percent and reached 1.04 billion transactions, the volume increased by 28.2 percent, reaching 14.5 trillion tenge (about $32.2 billion).
