BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, September 12. The water volume in Kyrgyzstan's Toktogul dam is expected to reach 11.7 billion cubic meters by October 1, Kyrgyzstan's Minister of Energy, Taalaibek Ibraev, said, Trend reports.
This will be 183 million cubic meters more than the water level at the dam as of September 9, 2023 (11.517 billion cubic meters).
He further projected that the reservoir will hold approximately 7 billion cubic meters of water by April 1, 2024, which is slightly less than the level at the beginning of April 2023 (7.8 billion cubic meters). The minister noted that the country is currently experiencing shortage of water.
The inflow at the dam was 360 cubic meters per second, while the outflow was 155 cubic meters per second, as of September 9, 2023.
The Toktogul dam is the largest reservoir in Kyrgyzstan, covering an area of 284 square kilometers with an average depth of around 215 meters. The dam's capacity is 19.5 billion cubic meters.
Its significance to the country's hydroelectric industry is invaluable, it houses two powerful hydroelectric power stations: Toktogul and Kurpsai HPPs.
