BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, December 7. A small hydroelectric power plant has been built in the Tong district of the Issyk-Kul region in Kyrgyzstan, with the support of the Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund, Trend reports.
The fund said a hydro turbine from the leading global manufacturer, Global Hydro (Austria) was installed at the site. The initial capacity of the plant is 4.5 megawatts, expected to generate 17.4 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
This project aims to develop Kyrgyzstan's energy sector and will cover 15 percent of the electricity demand in the Tong district.
Artem Novikov, the Chairman of the Board of the Russian-Kyrgyz Development Fund, mentioned the current shortage of power capacity in Kyrgyzstan, saying the plant will help to meet the population's electricity needs. The government has set the task to increase electricity generation, and this project contributes to that goal.
"This is our seventh project in the electricity production sector. For instance, thanks to the fund's financing, the construction of the Kulanak HPP is currently underway. This station alone will cover 20 percent of the electricity deficit in the country," he highlighted.
