BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 5. Currently, Switzerland is supporting the third phase of the Pamir Private Power Project in Tajikistan, aiming to enhance energy efficiency and ensure a resilient energy supply in the Pamir region, the source at the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs of Switzerland (SECO) told Trend.
“Switzerland and Tajikistan have a longstanding partnership in the energy sector. Switzerland’s collaboration with Pamir Energy Company, a public-private-partnership established 20 years ago, has helped to ensure reliable, affordable and sustainable energy supply in the Pamir region”, the SECO said.
According to the SECO, all energy provided by Pamir Energy is produced from renewable sources, including hydro or solar sources.
The secretariat emphasized that capacity building and the exchange of expertise between Switzerland and international sources are vital components of all initiatives supported by this country.
“In the collaboration with Pamir Energy, these activities focus on Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and building resilience of the energy system in the Pamir region, which is highly prone to natural hazards and the impacts of climate change,” the source said.
Given the high susceptibility to natural hazards and the impacts of climate change in the area, Switzerland's extensive expertise in this field is valuable, considering the shared geography and challenges between the two countries.
Furthermore, the SECO highlighted potential areas for future collaboration with Tajikistan, including ongoing efforts in energy efficiency and resilience.
The significance of sustainable hydropower provision, aligned with the Hydropower Sustainability Standard supported by Switzerland, was also underscored as a crucial area of interest.
In 2015, a natural disaster prompted Pamir Energy to enhance resilience and improve energy efficiency to meet growing demand. The goal of the Pamir Private Power Project is to improve living conditions and support economic development by providing reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity access in the Pamir region.
