The regions of Turkmenistan are continuing to register candidates for the local government elections, scheduled for August 19.

The elections are for two vacant seats in parliament which will also be held on the same day.

The Central Election Commission of Turkmenistan noted that nominations are now complete and the registration of candidates for local government bodies and MPs for the two electoral districts - No.26 being the Kaahkinsk district of the Akhal region and No.99 of the city of Mary.

Preparation for the elections was discussed at a recent government meeting. It was noted that 6100 constituencies were created for the election of members of the local governments at the territories of cities, towns and gengeshliks.

Some 1779 polling stations have been created at the districts, election commissions are formed, lists of voters defined. The composition of the electoral commissions included workers of various industries, nominated by public organisations and associations, as well as citizens' groups.

President Gurbanguly Berdymuhamedov emphasised that all work on preparations for the elections must be conducted strictly in accordance with applicable law and that the electorate should be entitled to a free and full discussion of the political, business and personal qualities of candidates and to assess their election programmes.

"Good organisation of work in this direction will allow voters to opt for the most deserving candidates for the popular mandate," the Turkmen leader said.
