Iranian Islamists protest against Denmark over cartoons

( dpa ) - Hundreds of Iranian Islamists staged a protest demonstration Wednesday against Denmark over the republication of a cartoon depicting the Muslim prophet Mohammed.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the Danish embassy in northern Tehran and shouted "Death to Denmark" for having allowed the Danish press to resume what they called insults to the world's Muslims.

A large number of police officers prevented the Islamists from approaching the embassy building and compound.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has several times called on the Danish government to confront "such renewed insults" which Tehran termed as contrary to both humanitarian and democratic norms.

Leading Danish newspapers reprinted the caricatures last month, a day after police said they had thwarted an alleged plot to kill the cartoonist, Dane Kurt Westergaard.

The cartoons sparked violent protests in 2006.
