In the past year, Iran examined 9013 foreign ships in its waters and seized 143 of them, the Iranian Labour News Agency (ILNA) reports.
Of the foreign ships Iran inspected, 944 had mechanical problems. Over the same period, 1680 Iranian ships were inspected and 83 were seized because of mechanical problems.
The World Maritime Organisation and environmental organisations are increasingly sensitive to pollution caused by ships with technical problems. Because of this, Iran's Ports and Maritime Organisation is taking greater care inspecting ships.
