Despite the enormous resources that Iran spends on fighting with drugs , this fight became ineffective, Iranian MP, member of the Commission on Public Affairs Daryush Ganbarov said on Saturday.

Iran is the second country in the world on drug use, and statistics show that the situation in this field has reached a critical level, Ganbarov said.

"Unreliable statistics on persons who use drugs, contributes to the fact that program on drug enforcement is not held at a proper level. According to a statistics, the country has 1.5 million drug addicts, according to other statistics, the figure is 7 million people," Ganbarov said.

According to Iranian media, 50 percent of Iranian prisoners convicted of a drug smuggling and using. This figure reaches 65 percent is in some Iranian provinces.

According to official statistics of Iranian drug enforcement agency, the country's 1.5 million drug users, 700,000 of whom are drug addicts and use drugs on a regular basis.
