Review of agriculture in Azerbaijan (january-november 2011)

Harvesting of most crops in the country's agriculture has almost completed by the end of November 2011. According to the State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan, as of Dec. 1, production of cereals and legumes in Azerbaijan totaled 2.457.9 million tons. Of these, 2.306.2 million tons were accounted for autumn and spring crops and legumes, while 151,700 tons or 6.2 percent - maize.

In addition to cereals and legumes, 477,900 tons of melons and gourds 1.196.500 million tons of vegetables were harvested, during this period, growth of which hit 10.3 percent and 1.5 percent respectively. Yield of melons and gourds was 144 quintals and vegetables - 148 quintals.

Potato production declined by 1.6 percent to 938,500 tons, while average potato yield per hectare hit 144 quintals.

As of Dec.1, 58,000 tons of cotton (a 64.5-percent growth during the year) with an average yield of 13.5 q / ha was collected. Also 3,600 tons of tobacco (a 10.6-percent increase), 761,200 tons of fruit (a 7.1-percent increase), 513,600 tons of green tea leaves (a 3.2-percent decrease), as well as 235,300 tons of sugar beet (a 7.9-percent increase) were harvested.

Azerbaijan continues autumn-winter field work to get the harvest for 2012. For this purpose, 965,300 hectares have been already ploughed up, which is 0.8 percent less than the corresponding period of last year due to unstable weather conditions. Sowing for grain was carried out in the territory of 831,300 hectares, of which area under wheat hits 598,900 hectares (specific weight 72 percent), barley - 232,400 hectares (28 percent).

A stable situation is observed in the production of livestock products. Thus, for 11 months of 2011, the production of meat in live weight was 417,200 tons, 1.491.5 million tons of milk, 916.5 million chicken eggs, 15.900 tons of wool. In January-November 2010, meat production grew by 4.2 percent, milk - by 6.5 percent, and wool - by 3.5 percent, and egg production fell by 15.3 percent

The total of agricultural products at actual prices for the 11 months of 2011 amounted to 4.383 billion manat, which is 6.8 percent more than the same period of the last year. In particular, livestock grew at actual prices by 3.6 percent, while crop production - by 9.4 percent.
