US calls for independent enquiry into Libyan "bloodshed"

The United States slammed Libya on Friday for "attacking its population," and called for an independent enquiry into the violence, dpa reported.

"This bloodshed is unacceptable," Ambassador Eileen Chamberlain Donahoe told a special session of the UN Human Rights Council.

"We have watched with alarm as demonstrators have been met with repression and lethal violence from their government," she said.

Speaking with reporters, Donahoe called Libya an "extreme case" and said Tripoli was "an extreme outlier in the international community" with regards to its human rights record.

"It is deeply disappointing that human rights are being so blatantly violated by a member of this Council," the US ambassador said.

The US is pushing for Libya to be removed from the 47-member council, which would require action by the UN General Assembly in New York. Tripoli was controversially elected to the rights body last year.
