The Gulf state of Bahrain will hold byelections on September 24 to replace those Shiite opposition parliamentarians who resigned in protest at the government crackdown on demonstrators, the official state news agency BNA reported Wednesday.

Any runoff for candidates will take place on October 1, dpa reported.

Some 18 lawmakers resigned from the 40-member parliament in February in protest at brutal repression of anti-government protests.

In Bahrain's monarchical system, the parliament is largely powerless.

According to Human Rights Watch, 31 people were killed and dozens injured in the February clampdown.
