Syrian mufti Ahmad Badreddin Hassoun has threatened Washington with terror attack on the U.S. in case of armed intervention in Syria, Al Arabiya reported.
Hassoun called all Arabs and Muslims to defend the Muslim lands of Western expansion.
Last week Russia and China used their veto power to torpedo a draft UN Security Council resolution condemning al-Assad's regime, although the text had been watered down to remove any references to sanctions.
Russia and China said they opposed the resolution because it contained no guarantees against foreign military intervention in Syria.
Mass protests in Syria began in mid March in Dera'a, the country's south, then spreading to other regions. According to Syria's Presidential Adviser Bouthaina Shaaban, 1,400 people died. Half of those dead were members of the army and security forces. According to the UN, there are 3,600 people dead.
The EU strongly condemns the use of military force against civilian demonstrators and demands an immediate end to all violence, urges all sides to act with restraint and calls for holding those responsible accountable for human rights violations.
The EU calls on Damascus to stop using force against civilians, to give access to human rights monitors and humanitarian agencies, and to restore basic services such as access to hospitals.
