Syrian Ambassador Imad Moustapha was leaving Washington on Monday after being recalled for consultations, a spokeswoman at the Syrian embassy said, dpa reported.
"It's just a recall for consultations, and usually it is temporary," embassy spokeswoman Roua Shurbaji told dpa.
She said she had "no idea" when Moustapha would return.
Earlier Monday, the United States brought its ambassador, Robert Ford, home from Damascus for consultations following a number of threats and an alleged campaign of "incitement" against Ford in Syrian state media, the US State Department said.
