Syrian president accuses United States of fuelling terrorism

Arab World Materials 8 July 2012 23:43 (UTC +04:00)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad accused the United States of fuelling terrorism in his country, in an interview broadcast by German television station ARD on Sunday, dpa reported.

Whether the support came in the form of weapons, money or political support in the United Nations, the United States had become the partner of terrorists, al-Assad said in the 20-minute interview conducted by German publisher and former parliamentarian Juergen Todenhoefer.

The interview was recorded in Damascus on Thursday and conducted in English. A transcript of the interview was released in German before it was broadcast.

Al-Assad has frequently blamed the violence in his country on "terrorists."

Al-Assad has given just a handful of interviews over the past month, including to the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet and the British weekly Sunday Times.
