( Newsvine ) Authorities have dropped charges of obstructing justice and contempt of court against the daughter of Kyrgyzstan's ousted president due to lack of evidence, her lawyer said Monday.
Bermet Akayeva was accused of pressuring a regional court to overturn its April decision barring her from running in a by-election to parliament.
Some 2,000 of her supporters besieged the court building after a judge disqualified her because she had mostly been living abroad since her father, President Askar Akayev , was ousted in 2005. Akayeva reportedly tore apart a copy of the court's ruling.
The National Security Committee dropped the charges of obstructing justice, contempt of court and destruction of court documents that were brought against Akayeva in August because she has no case to answer, said her lawyer Ikramidin Aytkulov .
"The case had no legal prospects. It was politically motivated," Aytkulov said.
Akayeva is the only member of the former president's family to have returned to this ex-Soviet republic since his ouster.
The former president, who fled to Russia, and his family were accused of amassing extensive business holdings through corruption during Akayev's more than a decade in power.
Kyrgyzstan, an impoverished Central Asian nation of 5 million people, has been plagued by political infighting since Akayev's ouster, with his successor, President Kurmanbek Bakiyev , facing allegations of corruption and cronyism.
