(dpa) - At least five people were killed Tuesday when a suspected suicide bomber struck at the Pakistan Navy War College in the eastern city of Lahore, officials said.

The attack occurred around 1:30 pm (08:30 GMT) in the college's parking lot, and also injured at least 12 people, said Malik Iqbal, the police chief in Lahore.

"Five people have been confirmed killed and more than a dozen injured," he said.

Mohammed Ijaz Miian, a local government official, said the attack may have come from multiple "suicide attacks" in the parking lot, and there were conflicting local media reports on whether the bomber was on foot or in a car and how many explosions occurred.

Body parts of victims and at least one suspected bomber were strewn across the blast site, DawnNews TV reported.

Local television images showed smoke and fire coming from the parking lot and multiple vehicles on fire or destroyed. Emergency medial crews were rushing the wounded to local hospitals, officials said.

It was the third suicide bombing in Pakistan in five days and the latest in a 13-month campaign by suspected Islamic militants targeting the military and political figures. Most of the attacks have occurred in the volatile North-West Frontier Province, but 20 policemen in Lahore were killed in January when a bomber blew himself up among them at a demonstration outside the High Court building.
