( dpa )- Britain and Ireland were bracing themselves for severe weather as storm force conditions were expected to batter coastal regions Sunday night.

Ireland's Met Eireann forecast gusts of 150 kilometres per hour in some parts and warned that heavy rain and high tides might cause flooding.

Severe gales and potentially damaging gusts were expected to hit particularly south-west Ireland and the west and south of England and Wales as an intense low pressure system moves east.

Dublin City Council has been putting a number of flood prevention measures in place in vulnerable parts of the Irish capital over the weekend.

Sailors and fishermen have been warned of conditions on the Irish Sea and the coastguard has urged people to stay away from all coastal regions.
