Melbourne's buses, cars, and trains spew out more greenhouse gases than London's - a city twice its size, a study released Tuesday showed. ( dpa )

Vehicles in Australia's second-biggest city generate the equivalent of 11 million tons of carbon dioxide a year compared with 8.5 million tons for London, a study commissioned by public transport lobby group Bus Association Victoria (BAV) found.

"Transport in London is almost three times more greenhouse friendly than Melbourne," BAV executive director John Stanley said.

A preference for commuting by car - petrol is cheap in Australia - partly explains the disparity. Also, Melbourne's trains and trams are powered by electricity generated with brown coal, one of the dirtiest energy sources, compared with Britain's black coal, gas and nuclear energy.
