( dpa )- The most notable thing about the marriage of the ex-wife of French President Nicholas Sarkozy was that nobody in the US appeared to have cared.

Cecilia Ciganer-Albeniz , the ex-wife, married US-based businessman Richard Attias on Sunday in New York, in the Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Centre, but none of the major US newspapers carried a peep about the couple.

Confirmation came from Paris Match, the French gossip magazine, on Monday.

Ciganer-Albeniz (50) had briefly left Sarkozy for Attias (48), a Moroccan-born events organizer, in 2005 but returned to Sarkozy ahead of the 2007 French presidential elections.

She created a stir last summer when she accompanied her husband to the US on vacation, but stayed away - either because she was ill or wanted to go shopping, depending on the various versions - when the French president dropped in on US President George Bush at the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The list of gifts requested by the couple appeared relatively modest, with sheets and towels as well as crockery including a set of six eggcups at 35 euros a piece, according to the website of the the Paris department store Au Bon Marche , which posted a wedding gift list for the couple.

Sarkozy himself remarried Italian-born model and singer Carla Bruni in a Paris registry wedding on February 2.
