( dpa )- US carrier Delta Air Lines said it was cancelling 275 flights through early Friday to inspect part of its fleet for possible security violations amid an industrywide probe by aviation authorities.

Delta said it voluntarily agreed to inspect all 117 of its MD-80 aircraft to ensure they complied with a government airworthiness directive. Most of the inspections would be finished by the evening and the airline expected to resume normal operations by early Friday.

The Federal Aviation Administration launched an audit of all US airlines last week after fining low-cost carrier Southwest Airlines a record 10.2 million dollars for failing to comply with safety regulations on its Boeing 737 aircraft.

American Airlines was forced to cancel 200 flights Wednesday to undergo similar inspections.
