Arsenal on course for group stages after win in Holland

Arsenal have one foot in the group stages of the Champions League after they won 2-0 Wednesday at Twente Enschede in the first leg of their third-round qualifier, dpa reported.

Second-half goals from captain William Gallas and striker Emmanuel Adebayor were enough to give Arsenal victory over a side managed by former England coach Steve McClaren.

Alessandro Del Piero was on the scoresheet as Juventus crushed Artmedia Petrzalka 4- 0 in Turin, while Atletico Madrid will have to overturn a deficit in the second leg after they were beaten 1-0 at German side Schalke.

Dynamo Kiev turned in an impressive 4-1 win at Spartak Moscow, while Turkish side Galatasaray had to come from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at home to Steaua Bucharest.

Former champions Marseille won 1-0 at SK Brann Bergen, Greek side Panathinaikos won 2-1 at Sparta Prague, Shakhtar Donetsk beat Dynamo Zagreb 2-0 and Bate Borisov pulled off a shock with a 1-0 win at Levski Sofia.

Olympiakos have a mountain to climb after they lost 3-0 at Anorthosis Famagusta while AAB Aalborg beat FKB Kaunas 2-0.

Five-time champions Liverpool, Spanish club Barcelona, Fenerbahce and FC Basle were all in action in late kick-offs.
