A new constitution promoted by leftist Ecuadorian President Rafael Correa was approved by a large majority in a referendum Sunday, according to exit polls issued at the close of voting, dpa reported.

Although no official results were made immediately released, Correa declared victory in what he called a "landslide."

An exit poll by the firm Cedatos said that 66.4 per cent of voters favoured the new text, while the survey firm SP put the "yes" vote at 70 per cent. dpa sl vs ff
