UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon welcomed on Wednesday the swearing-in of Morgan Tsvangirai as the prime minister of Zimbabwe earlier in the day, calling on the new government to immediately address economic and humanitarian crises in the country, Xinhua reported.

"This is an important step in the implementation of the Sept. 15 Global Peace Agreement between the Zimbabwean parties," Ban said in a statement issued by his press office, referring to a historical political agreement last year.

"The United Nations reiterates its offer of support to the new government in its recovery efforts to ease the suffering of the Zimbabwean people," he added.
Tsvangirai, leader of main opposition MDC-T, was sworn in by President Robert Mugabe on Wednesday as prime minister along with his two deputies in a unity government.
