The Uruguayan anti-drug brigade has detained five people and seized 500 kg of lidocaine, substance used to produce cocaine, in a crackdown on drug trafficking network, local daily "El Pais" reported Thursday.
The operation took place in the capital city of Montevideo and in the locality of Maldonado, 130 km east of Montevideo, Xinhua reported.
Among the detainees was a lab director suspected to be in charge of importing the chemical precursor used to produce cocaine.
The drug trafficking network has affiliates in Brazil and Paraguay, officials said.
