One woman dead, three wounded in West Beirut clashes

One woman was killed and three other people were wounded in West Beirut area of Aysha Bakkar Sunday when clashes erupted between Shiite members of Speaker Nabih Berri's Amal Movement and Sunni supporters of designated Prime Minister Saad Hariri, local Elnashra website reported, according to Xinhua.
   Rockets and machine-guns were used during the clashes which were intensified Sunday afternoon due to Saturday's provocations after celebrating gunshots were fired by Hariri's supporters for his designation as prime minister, local New TV reported.
   "Since yesterday, tension increased between the two sides when Hariri's supporters intimidated Berri's followers," New TV reporter said.
   Shiite supporters of Amal Movement and Hezbollah clashed in May 2008 with Sunni members of Saad Hariri's Mustaqbal Movement in West Beirut for over a week, leading to Hezbollah's control over the capital.
   The Doha deal reached on May 21 sponsored by the Arab league and signed by Lebanese rival groups prevented a new civil war in the country.
   Hariri was designated Saturday by President Michel Suleiman to form a new cabinet following June 7 parliamentary elections which was won by the ruling majority.
