At least 10 people died and five were injured in the collision of two freight trains at the San Blas train station in the northern Mexican state of Sinaloa, authorities said Tuesday, dpa reported.

The cause of the accident according to an initial investigation was a broken warning sign that should have alerted the moving train to the stopped train, which was reportedly undergoing repairs in the station.

Some of the victims were reportedly riding atop or inside freight cars. Those people are believed to be migrants, possibly passing through Mexico from Central America, bound for an illicit border crossing into the United States.
