Renewed Juventus open season with crash at Bari

Serie A minnows Bari opened their season Sunday with a 1-0 defeat of dithering giants Juventus clinched through a great first-half shot from their inspired midfielder Massimo Donati, dpa reported.

Juve's lineup reflected the club's new course as new coach Luigi Delneri started off with six newcomers, including striker Fabio Quagliarella, who arrived from Napoli on Friday and to replace the injured Amauri.

Delneri also used Serb midfielder Milos Krasic, a fresh purchase from CSKA Moscow, but after the break replaced him with Uruguayan newcomer Jorge Martinez as he struggled to come up with more aggressive schemes.

Bari dangerously botched a couple of clearances early in the game, but gradually took control and created good chances when Brazilian Paulo Barreto squandered an early drive before setting up Frenchman Abdelkader Ghezzal for a close-range shot that Marco Storari had serious troubles deflecting.

A header from ex-Bari Leonardo Bonucci and a deflected shot from Brazil's Felipe Melo were Juve's telling efforts in a first half that the hosts closed one up through Donati's feat.

The midfielder came on for the injured Alessandro Gazzi and on 43 minutes drilled his shot into Storari's top-right corner.

The former-AC Milan goalkeeper was hired to fill in for the long-time injured star Gianluigi Buffon, who most likely could have done little on the impressive shot.

Donati again threatened early into the second half when a defender nicked his effort before Barreto produced a tremendous spurt that brought him past Storari, but Giorgio Chiellini managed a desperate clearance.

Newcomer Davide Lanzafame came on for an ineffective Simone Pepe, also a new arrival, and Mali's Mohamed Sissoko replaced Melo, but Delneri's side continued to suffer under Bari's pressing and failed to provide useful feeds upfront for Quagliarella, Lanzafame and veteran captain Alessandro Del Piero.

Ghezzal came again close to scoring when he fired into the legs of Bonucci, while Quagliarella tried a fast but ineffective volley in the final minutes and Chiellini squandered an injury-time header.

AC Milan play at home against promoted Lecce later Sunday, when five other games are scheduled, and champions Inter Milan play late Monday at Bologna.

Roma disappointed their home crowd Saturday as promoted Cesena took home a scoreless draw from the Stadio Olimpico. The season start was excellent for Genoa as they won 1-0 away to Udinese.
