An Uzbekistani man was sentenced to nearly 16 years in prison Friday for threatening to kill President Barack Obama, the Justice Department said, DPA reported.
A judge in Alabama sentenced Ulugbek Kodirov, who had lived in the United States since 2009, to 15 years and eight months for providing material support to terrorism, threatening the president and illegal weapon possession. He had pleaded guilty in February.
Federal agents had provided Kodirov with a machine gun and hand grenades at a meeting last year after he expressed a desire to kill Obama to an informant who then introduced him to an undercover agent. He was arrested after leaving the meeting where he was given the weapons.
Kodirov had originally communicated online with someone he believed to be a member of the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, which the US has designated a terrorist group. The exchanges led him to believe he should kill the president and he spoke about his desire with other individuals, the Justice Department said.
